C1000 consolidates IT Infrastructure on novascale bullion

Significant reduction on energy consumption realized

Diemen, March  15, 2011 -

Supermarket-giant C1000 migrates its complete Windows infrastructure to four Bull novascale bullion servers, two for production and two for redundancy and testing. By consolidating their infrastructure on the bullion servers, C1000 will realize a consolidation of their already virtualized server farm from fifty physical servers to four physical servers, whilst retaining full performance and redundancy functionalities. Aside from the reduction in management, C1000 expects to also save significantly on energy consumption, a resource that is becoming increasingly sparse.

Virtualization

The novascale bullion is a scalable, high-end server designed with high availability, flexibility and energy efficiency in mind. These benefits, combined with a native VMware hypervisor, position the bullion servers as a key building block in the design of private clouds. Merhan Shalji, IT Operations Manager at C1000 explains: "Bull has been our IT partner for a number of years and we regularly discuss our vision on IT - where do we want to be, what adaptations need to be made to get there and how can we change and improve our service model? One of the primary topics was to increase operational efficiency. By applying virtualization technology, we were planning to consolidate our hardware infrastructure without compromising on performance. The bullion turns out to be a fantastic vehicle to realize this functionality."

Savings

In the selection process, C1000 also considered products from other vendors. However, no other server platform was able to realize the savings that the bullion server could attain. Additional benefits of the bullion server are its scalability, which allowed for a higher density in consolidation, a further reduction in management costs as well as a significant reduction in data center floor space. Merhan Shalji: "We have started the migration process and expect to be fully operational on the bullion servers within a few months. Aside from lowering the operational costs and improving efficiency, this migration is also an important step towards our future mode of operations. With the bullion, we are taking a first step towards a private cloud and expect to capitalize on all the benefits that are to be attained from cloud computing."
